Connecting to the Company VPN: How to Safely Access Corporate Networks Remotely
In a modern, remote-first or hybrid work environment, data security doesn’t stop at the office doors. When you work from home, a coffee shop, or a hotel, your internet connection is exposed to external risks. To protect sensitive client data and company infrastructure, ALCO USA implements a mandatory Virtual Private Network (VPN) policy for all remote connections.
The VPN creates an encrypted, secure “tunnel” between your device and your organization’s private infrastructure, ensuring that your web traffic cannot be intercepted.
**
Prerequisites Before Connecting**
To connect successfully, your workstation must have:
- An active internet connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
- The pre-installed ALCO Secure Connect VPN agent.
- Your registered Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) device nearby.
Step-by-Step Connection Guide
Whether you are on a corporate Windows machine or a managed macOS device, the process is streamlined to prioritize both security and ease of access.
**
Step 1: Launch the VPN Client**
- Windows: Click the network or system tray icon in the bottom-right corner of your taskbar. Select the** ALCO Secure Connect** icon, or search for it in your Start Menu.
- macOS: Open your Applications folder or click the VPN gateway lock icon located in the top menu bar.
Step 2: Authenticate with Your Corporate Credentials
- In the server or profile dropdown menu, ensure your company’s designated gateway is selected (this is auto-configured by ALCO USA).
- Enter your standard corporate email address and network passphrase.
- Click Connect.
Step 3: Complete the Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Check
Security Guardrail: Every remote connection attempt triggers a mandatory security handshake.
A notification will immediately fire to your authenticator app (Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator) on your smartphone.
- Approve the prompt on your phone or enter the matching number displayed on your computer screen.
- Once authorized, the VPN client status will change from Connecting… to Connected.
You now have secure access to local file servers, internal web tools, and network printers as if you were physically sitting in the corporate office.

Basic VPN Troubleshooting**
If you experience a connection failure, check these common variables before raising a help ticket: - The “Double Wi-Fi” Conflict: If your home network requires you to log into a browser-based splash page (common in hotels or public transit), you must complete that internet sign-in before opening the VPN client.
- Time & Date Synchronization: If your computer clock is off by more than three minutes from true time, the security certificate handshake will fail. Allow your system to sync time automatically via internet time servers.
- Bandwidth Requirements: A stable VPN connection requires a minimum upload and download speed of 10 Mbps. If your home network is congested by heavy streaming or downloading, your connection may drop.
